Life through the lens of boats

Nicola Arnese

Updated: Nov 16, 2024

During my Master School coaching studies, I came across "Je Connais Des Bateaux" by Mannick, a song rich in metaphors about life through the lens of boats.

The song depicts various boats: some stay in the harbor, others brave the seas.

Boats in the harbor, held back by fear or comfort, mirror those times in our lives when we avoid change. Yet, these aren't 'bad' boats. They're simply in a phase of seeking safety and familiarity, which is a natural part of life.

There are also boats that venture out, facing the waves and winds. They return weathered but resilient, embodying our courageous moments when we step out of our comfort zones. These experiences shape us, fostering growth and strength.

The song beautifully concludes with boats that have 'ocean-sized hearts.' These boats have fully embraced life, illustrating a journey of purpose and love.

We can be different boats at different times in our lives.  There's no right or wrong boat to be. Each represents a choice, a phase of life we're navigating through.

Being aware of these different options is important. Like these boats, we too have the capacity to evolve, to choose whether to stay in the harbor or sail towards new horizons, embracing the vast and varied experiences life offers.

I know of boats

  • I know of boats Who stay in the harbor out of fear That the currents drag them away too violently.

  • I know of boats rusting in the harbor For never risking a sail out.

  • I know boats that forget to leave Are afraid of the sea as they grow old And the waves never took them anywhere else, Their journey ended before it even began.

  • I know boats that are so chained Who have unlearned how to free themselves.

  • I know of boats that stay swaying To be really sure not to capsize.

  • I know of boats that go in groups To face the strong wind beyond fear.

  • I know of boats that get a little scratched up.On ocean routes where their game takes them.

  • I know of boats That they never stopped coming out once again, every day of their lives And who are not afraid at times to launch themselves Side by side forward at risk of sinking.

  • I know of boats Returning to port torn all over, But braver and stronger.

  • I know boats overflowing with sunshine Because they shared wonderful years.

  • I know of boats who always return when they have sailed.Until their last day,And they are ready to spread their wings of giants. Because they have an ocean-sized heart.
